Cheyenne River Reservation, SD
In the summer of 2014 Gopher Global attended their second community outreach trip to Eagle Butte Reservation in South Dakota. With involvement of University of Minnesota department staff member, Anissa Lightner, student-athletes teamed up with local community organizer Cody Hall and educated elementary students on the importance of health, wellness, and education.
Twelve University of Minnesota student athletes traveled from the Twin Cities to Eagle Butte Reservation, home of the Cheyenne River Tribe. The student athletes spent the first two hours on the reservation constructing and attaching stairways to mobile homes in the community. In addition to building, the volunteers picked up trash at the site, creating a more clean and safe environment for the neighborhood. In the afternoon, Gopher Global went to two different schools to discuss the importance of staying in school, working hard, and being fit. Active engagement with the elementary students sparked authentic conversations about academic and athletic dreams. The positive influence of the student athletes became noticeable in the kids’ curiosity and excitement. Not only did the Gopher Global members inspire and motivate the kids on Eagle Butte Reservation, but they also learned from the elementary students through listening to their personal stories. This service trip benefited, educated, and enriched both groups, giving each an unforgettable experience. More at GopherSports |
